Smoke Drawings
4 November 2016
It’s not clear where the smoke comes from – it may be caused by friction between the cubes in the administrative paintings, or from the background asserting an obscuring influence. It could be clouds, fog, heavens…explosions. The curves wear down the hard edges of the cubes, lead to new forms.
I make the smoke by tracing around small templates. These templates are also used to draw the rounded curtain folds found in certain paintings. The templates are portable. I outline the rounded forms based on repeating rules, erasing and rebuilding. Forms are filled in, pointed at, etc. Tape fragments and other leftovers from the making of the paintings can end up in a smoke drawing.
